Chronic cough

  • Chronic cough

Chronic coughing is a frustrating problem for many people. It can be socially disruptive and embarassing.

There are many potential causes of chronic cough. These include swallowing problems, where food and or liquids have a tendency to go into the lungs. Other causes include reflux, sinus problems and lung problems.

In some people, all these causes have been eliminated, but the cough persists. There are several new options available for people with chronic cough.

  • Treatment Options

Depending on clinical findings, serveral treatment options can be considered.

The superior laryngeal nerve block is an office procedure that helps reduce hypersensitivity of the throat to cough.

Neuromuscular blockers such as botulinum toxin can be very helpful in supressing or eliminating cough when there is no obvious cause.

Finally, some medications can be useful in treating certain types of cough.
