No burp syndrome (retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction)

  • What is it?

No burp syndrome is a problem that mostly affects young people and is the inability to burp. Most people will say that they cannot remember ever being able to burp.

This leads to a lot of uncomfortable symptoms. These include abdominal bloating that increase throughout the day, sometimes chest pains, gurgling noises in the chest and lower neck, as you strain and try to eject the air.

It can also lead to excessive gas which can be socially embarrassing. Many people go through several unecessary tests which are mostly normal.

  • How is it treated?

Fortunately there is treatment available for this problem. This involves the injection of neurotoxins (like botulinum toxin) into the muscle that allows you to burp.

Even though these neurotoxins usually last a few months. In no burp syndrome, one injection is usually enough to cure the problem.

Recently, burping exercices have also become available to increase the therapeutic success. These are done with the help of a voice therapist.
